Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical technique performed on the digestive system of patients suffering from morbid obesity, who will lose between 45 and 60 kg*.
Sleeve gastrectomy is the removal of a portion of the stomach, which is reduced to a tube.
This procedure allows patient to lose a considerable amount of weight by causing a sensation of rapid satiety due to the decrease level of ghrelin (the appetite hormone).

Day of Surgery

The procedure takes between 1.5 and 2 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The length of hospital stay is 5 days.

The sleeve consists of removing 2/3 of the stomach to form a tube.

This restrictive procedure cuts away the part containing the cells responsible for secreting the appetite-stimulating hormone (ghrelin). It reduces the size of the stomach and slows down the passage of food through the stomach without interfering with digestion: food is first slowed down during the passage through the tube, and then very quickly emptied into the intestine.

After your surgery

– You may drink liquids the day after surgery and start moving about slowly.

– Postoperative pain is usually mild and requires only routine pain relievers.

– You may resume your normal activities after 3 to 4 weeks and strenuous activity 1 month post-surgery*.

– The first week following surgery you are allowed to eat a mixture of liquid and pureed food (soup, compotes, yoghurt, mashed potatoes, etc.). By the 2nd and 3rd week, you should be able to eat “tender” food (ratatouille, scrambled eggs, etc.). From the 4th week on, you can eat a regular diet again but keep in mind that each food is tolerated very differently from one person to another.

Disclaimer: Results may vary from one person to another depending on the patients body shape.
