Hallux valgus is an orthopedic surgery procedure. Hallux valgus surgery refers to an abnormal deviation of the big toe that is a little too close to the second toe. This deviation causes a deformity of the forefoot, at the level of the first metatarsal and the big toe.
The misalignment of the big toe results in the formation of a bump or “bunion”. This bony protrusion is usually aggravated by walking. It can prevent the wearing of certain shoes and can sometimes be associated with bursitis (inflammation of a bursa).
Because hallux valgus can be very painful and cause daily discomfort (rubbing against the shoe when walking), it is important to treat it. Surgery for hallux valgus aims to correct the misalignment of the big toe and to eliminate the pain. It also allows the big toe to regain its propulsive role.
Hallux valgus is a disease that generally appears around the age of 40 and mainly affects women (95% of cases). However, there is a juvenile form of the disease, which is often a severe form of hallux valgus.
Among the causes and risk factors for the development of hallux valgus are heredity, age, wearing inappropriate shoes (too narrow or pointed, high-heeled shoes…), Egyptian foot (excess length of the big toe), flat foot (valgus) and menopause in women.

The first step in hallux valgus surgery is the pre-operative assessment. This is a clinical and radiological assessment that must be complete. The orthopedic surgeon must ensure that your health condition allows the operation to be performed and that you have no contraindications. This assessment also allows the surgeon to define the best operating method for your case. He must also inform you of the risks, the recovery time and the cost of the operatio
Hallux valgus surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. It takes about 20 to 40 minutes and requires an overnight stay in the hospital.
There are different surgical techniques to treat hallux valgus, but osteotomy (double sectioning of the bone) is the most commonly used technique. With this technique, the surgeon cuts the first metatarsal and the first phalanx. The surgeon then moves the bone fragments to reduce the angle between them before fixing them with a staple, screw or pins.
Painkillers and anti-inflammatories will be prescribed for the first few days.
You can resume walking the day after the operation. However, you will have to wear special shoes that allow you to rest on your heel. These shoes must be worn for three to four weeks.
Self-education should be started 2 weeks after the operation. These exercises are intended to help you recover joint amplitude in a progressive manner.
From the third week after the operation, you can begin rehabilitation sessions with a physiotherapist.
You will be able to return to work approximately 1.5 months after the operation.
