Gingivectomy Tunisia: Gum surgery for a harmonious smile

Gingivectomy Tunisia: what is gum surgery?

Gingivectomy Tunisia or Gingivoplasty is a specialty of dental surgery that focuses on the treatment of gums. It consists of removing excess gum tissue in order to improve the appearance of your gums and give you a beautiful smile.

Cosmetic gingivectomy is for people who suffer from overly visible or unusually shaped gums or persistent periodontal disease. It is usually indicated in the following cases:

Treatment of periodontitis, especially when the results of dental curettage are unsatisfactory.
Treatment of gingival hyperplasia (resulting from medication for high blood pressure or epilepsy). Sometimes one or more teeth are completely covered by gum tissue, and a gingivectomy is required to correct this problem.
Correction of a gummy smile, especially when the upper gums are abnormally exposed.

A distinction must be made between :

Gingivectomy: removal of excess gum tissue.
Gingivoplasty: reshaping the gums to give them a more natural appearance. Although often performed alone, gingivoplasty can also be combined with a gingivectomy or a gum graft.

Gingivectomy in Tunisia: what you need to know before you start

The first step is the medical examination. The periodontologist must evaluate your gums before he or she can present a verdict and establish an appropriate treatment plan. He or she must also tell you about the cost and duration of the procedure, as well as the potential risks.

A thorough dental cleaning is required before proceeding with a gingivectomy. This removes plaque and tartar from the teeth.

Gingivectomy is performed under local anesthesia. The duration of the procedure depends on the amount of gum tissue to be removed. It can last from a few minutes to more than 1 hour.

Gingivectomy is usually done with a scalpel. However, it is possible to use electrosurgery or laser gingivectomy.

Gingivectomy can be done using two techniques:

The external bevel technique. This technique is used when the attached gum is high enough.
The internal bevel technique. This technique is used when the attached gum is not very high.

Painkillers will be prescribed for the pain.

A periodontal dressing will be placed on the gums to protect the wound. This dressing will have to be worn for one week to 10 days. You will need to avoid the operated area when brushing your teeth, as long as the dressing is in place.

A special diet should be followed based on soft and liquid foods. Hard, spicy and hot foods should be avoided for a while.

Good oral hygiene is essential to promote optimal healing and avoid any risk of infection. An antiseptic mouthwash will be prescribed for this purpose.

The gums begin to look normal after 3 to 4 weeks. Complete healing usually takes 2 to 3 months.

The prices of gum surgery (gingivectomy and gingivoplasty) depend on the number of teeth involved and the technique used.
However, it can be estimated that on average, in Tunisia, a gingivectomy can cost up to 50% less than the price charged in Europe.
