Vaginoplasty is an intimate surgery that aims to tighten the vagina when it is distended, most often after one or more pregnancies, by reducing the diameter of the vaginal opening and strengthening the muscles of the perineum. This looseness can be accompanied by discomfort and sometimes urinary leakage, which should first be assessed medically (pelvic floor rehabilitation, gynecological or urological opinion).
Please note: the effect of aesthetic vaginoplasty on sexual life has not been demonstrated. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG, Committee Opinion No. 795, 2020) classifies “vaginal rejuvenation” among procedures with no medical indication, whose safety and effectiveness are not documented; possible complications include infection, altered sensation, pain during intercourse, adhesions and scarring.

The first step is a consultation with the gynecologist. The gynecologist will ask you questions about your general health to find out your medical history and whether you are taking certain treatments. Following this evaluation, he will be able to determine if your expectations are realistic or not. He will also discuss with you the risks, recovery time and cost of the procedure.

Vaginoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. It lasts about one hour and rarely requires hospitalization.
The surgeon makes an incision at the entrance of the vagina, tightens the muscular floor and removes the excess tissue; fat may be reinjected to complete the reshaping of the vaginal wall.
The sutures used are absorbable, so they do not need to be removed. The scars, located inside the vagina, are generally discreet.
The after-effects of the vaginoplasty are not very painful. Simple analgesics are generally sufficient to reduce the pain.
A slight hematoma and minimal swelling may appear, but they usually disappear quickly.
The resumption of daily activities is done after 4 to 5 days. Sexual activities can be resumed after the 5th week following the operation.
Healing takes about 10 days. It is recommended to avoid tampons during the first 2 weeks.
The final results can be observed after one month.
An improvement in sexual relations can be appreciated progressively, especially from the third month.
As far as anesthesia is concerned, during the consultation, the anesthesiologist will inform the patient of the risks of anesthesia.
It is important to know that anesthesia induces reactions in the organism that are sometimes unpredictable and more or less easy to control: the fact of having recourse to a qualified anesthesiologist, practicing in a truly surgical context, means that the risks incurred are reduced, although not eliminated.
