Gastric Balloon Insertion in Tunisia: How does it work?

The Consultation

During the pre-operative consultation session, the bariatric surgeon performs a thorough examination and reviews the patient’s medical history to determine the right balloon for the patient’s indications.

The surgery

*Polyurethane balloon insertion.

This type of gastric balloon is implanted without surgical procedure, endoscopy or anesthesia.

The patient swallows a capsule connected to a small tube: a catheter. Once in the stomach, the capsule will melt. The balloon is filled with sterile saline water through the catheter. The amount of liquid is decided by the specialist for each patient.

The placement of the polyurethane balloon is done under radiographic control. The device disintegrates for 4 to 6 months before it is eliminated through the stool.

Ballon Gastrique en Silicone

*Insertion of a silicone balloon.

It is flexible and implanted by endoscopy: through the mouth under general anesthesia.

Once installed in the stomach, the medical device is filled with sterile saline liquid: saline often tinted with methylene blue to give a green urine as an indication when it is pierced,

The liquid is introduced through a small filling tube: a catheter attached to the balloon and removed when the balloon is filled. There are also air-filled balloons that bariatric surgeons do not recommend because they are uncomfortable.

The implantation and removal of the balloon is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia in two procedures that last less than 30 minutes each. The silicone balloon is placed in the stomach for one year and it disintegrates due to the effect of the hydrochloric acid contained in the stomach. After this time, the balloon is no longer effective because the stomach has adapted to its presence.

The gastric balloon is an important tool to help a patient lose weight but it is not a magic solution. A nutritional follow-up with a qualified dietician is essential in order to reach one’s goal in terms of weight loss.

This process leads to a feeling of satiety which allows you to eat smaller portions without feeling hungry. The food stays in the stomach for a longer period of time. The patient avoids snacking between meals.

One month after the gastric balloon is removed, the dietician helps the patient consolidate his or her new eating habits, which are an essential factor in the sustainability of the results.

Often, the patient resumes daily activities after 24 to 48 hours following the placement of the gastric balloon. Some patients may experience nausea, abdominal cramps and vomiting. Such symptoms are well controlled with medication prescribed by the bariatric surgeon.

As a general rule, most patients achieve a loss of between 20 and 50% of their excess weight during the four months of the medical program: an average of 13 to 15 kilos.

Between 10 and 15% weight loss on average after 4 months.

An average of 10 to 15 kilos of weight loss after 4 months.

A maintenance of 95% of the weight loss during the 12 months following the removal of the gastric balloon.
